100+ Posts

December 26, 2011

I just passed the 100 post mark on this blog. When I started it 2 1/2 years ago, I was skeptical of its value- to me OR to others. In my initial post I said:

” I’m hoping this blog will be a way for me to be more reflective about my own creative process and to start dialogues with other art makers and appreciators.”

Surprisingly, I feel maintaining this blog has helped me be more self-reflective about my twisty creative path and what outside influences come onto play. Though posting regularly is always a challenge.

And I’ve certainly heard from lots of folks and appreciate their comments!. I’d love more back and forth discussions to be happening though. I need to get better at directly asking for feedback!
Any suggestions about what you’d like to hear more (or less!) about in this blog??

Fundamental Change IV-part 3

May 5, 2010

Using tailor’s chalk (wipes off with water if you don’t forget and iron on it first -I’m an expert on this point), I drew the large cellular shapes from the drawing onto the background cloth making lots of adjustments along the way. For example, I felt there needed to be an entry space at the bottom between the large shapes. The story in my head about this series involves small organic stuff moving through a space and being transformed in some way. So I wanted it to be flowing up from below.

I decided to use a rust/russet/ gold variegated yarn I’d bought years ago to define the outer part of the translucent area of each shape. I couched the yarn down stitching with a rust colored thread.

Fundamental Change IV- part 2

The original sketch:

Messy. I know. This went through lots of revisions, many not erased very well. At this stage, I’m just trying to settle on an overall composition that I can then play with further on the design wall. The large cellular shapes needed to fit together in a flowing way that also created lovely negative space between them. I also wasn’t sure at this point whether I wanted those large shapes to be solid OR to have a solid core/nucleus with translucent space around that defined by lines.

But after I stitched around the serendititous shapes left by the migrating paint on  the background kona cotton piece (see previous post), I knew I wanted more of those organic stitch lines to show. So I’ve decided to have translucent areas around solid cores. Next job is to decide how  to define that outer area of each cell shape. To be continued…

What’s all this about “The Spaces Between”??

March 12, 2010

I’m still finding it interesting to explore the possibilities in this series.  To me, The Spaces Between is about connection/disconnection, reaching out/being guarded, communication/miscommunication…you get the idea?

The shape of the negative space in each piece (the space between) is important to me as is the imagery of the “crossing” of that space.

I’m finishing up this new one. This is a detail shot of it about 90% done. Some additional stitching in the “between” space and some well placed french knots still to come.

The finished piece will be 12″x12″ mounted on  silk covered stretcher bars to 18″x18″. I’ll also do some stitching on the background silk. More on that later.

SAQA Featured Artist selection

February 8, 2010

I have been a member of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) for several years. Lots of very talented folks! I subscribe to their member yahoo group and often get pearls of wisdom from other fiber artists “in the trenches” so to speak.

This year they have begun to choose 2-3 artists a month to be  “Featured Artists” on the website. I was surprised and happy to be notified that I’ve been chosen to be the featured artist during one month of 2010. I’m deciding which images to send them today.

Back from Paradise

January 26, 2010

I just returned from a two week visit with my daughter in Hawaii. It was my first time there and I’m still digesting all that gorgeous visual richness of colors and textures. Tropical fish, rain forests, sensuous warm sand, wild lava rock formations and sea turtles! Lots of ‘em!

Green Sea Turtle

This one (about 2 or so feet long) was resting on  rocks near a fairly busy beach but didn’t seem to mind me sitting close by to draw a portrait. I loved drawing the patterns on the shell and limbs.

I was also fascinated by the lines and textures in the volcanic rock.  Some formations looked like thick black cake batter that had hardened while flowing.

How all this visual input will effect my art remains to be seen but I trust it’s all percolating in me somewhere.

The Spaces Between VI takes shape

December 27, 2009

Since I’m still machine-less,  I’ll post about the piece stalled on my design wall.

Here’s the sketch I started with:

I extended the design (in my head) to make it a square and decided to use a palette of grays, blue, greens and reddish purple. I also constructed it so the “between” space is flatter and the other parts are raised slightly 3-D by using  two more layers of batting. It gives it more of a sculpted look which I’m liking!
