Well the yellow-green french knots didn’t work; too much of a contrast. I tried 2-3 other colors and schemes-all unsatisfying and I was too discouraged to photograph them all.
I settled (I think) on this random dash/dot pattern in 3 shades of red. Much subtler with more focus on texture. Looks like cellular morse code/ communication to me.

I often get to this moment and get a bit frozen. I know something is lacking but haven’t nailed it yet. My original plan was to add yellow-green french knots along the red “between” spaces. This would give it movement and satisfy a metaphorical sense of “life/energy” flowing.
I also like the juxtaposition of a large cohesive composition AND smaller elements. So i may just have to spend some hours french knotting ( I actually find it meditative) and see if it works.
Last week I was very pleased to get an email from Paula Melton who writes for artscope magazine, a beautiful large format publication featuring Boston area and New England artists and gallery happenings. She wants to do a feature in the July/ August issue on my art. I’m always a bit nervous at first when I’m in the position of having to be articulate about what I do. It feels to me at times like a chaotic, seat of the pants process! But Paula asked good questions and I realize once I get going that talking about my art helps me organize my thoughts and hone in on what’s important. Plus we laughed a lot which always helps.
I just shipped three pieces to be hung at the upcoming show at Visions Art Quilt Gallery in San Diego. Here are the details:
